Camping Baraga State Park - 119 Campsites - (906) 353-6558 Located on US-41 just south of Baraga. Sites have electricity, fire pit and picnic table. Two restroom/shower buildings. 3/4 of mile hiking trail. L'Anse Township Park & Campground - 30 Campsites - (906) 524-6985 Located 2 miles east of L'Anse on the Skanee Road. Sites have electricity, fire pit and picnic table. Flush toilets and showers available. Ojibwa Recreation Area - 50 Campsites - (906) 353-6955 Located north of Baraga on US 41. Sites have electricity, fire pit and picnic table. Marina, flush toilets and showers available. Witz's Marina & Campground - 50 Campsites - (906) 524-7795 Located 16 miles east of L'Anse in Skanee, Michigan. Convenience Store, boat launch and fine fishing on Huron Bay. Craig Lake State Park c/o Van Riper State Park - (906) 339-4461 Located on the eastern end of Baraga County near Three Lakes, Michigan. Rustic Camping. Special fishing & motor boat regulations apply to all lakes within Craig lake State Park. Some roads maybe impassable or passable with 4 wheel drive vehicles only. Beaufort Lake State Forest Campground - 7 Campsites State forest campground 1.5 miles SE of Three Lakes. Boating, swimming and fishing. Big Erick's Bridge State Forest Campground - 20 Campsites State Forest Campground 21 miles east of L'Anse near Skanee, Michigan. Swimming, outdoor toilets and fishing on the Huron River. Big Lake State Forest Campground - 12 Campsites State Forest Campground 9 miles NW of Covington, Michigan. Boating, swimming, outdoor toilets and fishing. King Lake State Forest Campground - 6 Campsites State Forest Campground 15 miles east of Covington, Michigan. Boating, fishing and outdoor toilets. Mouth of the Huron Located North of Skanee, Michigan. Rustic Camping. State permit required. There are no outdoor toilets or water available. But there is a beautiful view of the Huron Islands and miles of sandy beach. Hiking and Backpacking North Country Hiking Trail in Baraga County The North Country National Scenic Trail is a premier footpath that stretches more than 4,000 miles to link communities and wilderness areas across seven northern states. More than 1,700 miles have been certified off-road. Additional miles follow shared footpaths and some road walks yet remain. The map link above shows the trail in its entirety. When completed it will be the longest off-road hiking trail in the United States. North Country Trail Association Home Page Mt. Arvon The Highest Point in Michigan. Silver Mountain Climb the stairs to enjoy a panoramic view of the Sturgeon River Valley and Prickett Dam Lake. Go west on M-38 about 8-10 miles, turn left on Prickett Dam Road and then follow the signs to Silver Mountain. It's about a 20-25 minute walk. Little Mountain Hike to the top for a panoramic view of Keweenaw Bay and the Huron Mountains. Go 2 miles south of L'Anse and turn right by the Golf Course then proceed another 2 miles and park at the sign and white rocks. It's about a 20-25 minute walk. Slate Quarry Walk through the remains of the quarry area that dates back to the 1800's. Big Erick's Bridge and Falls Named after a prominent Skanee logger, this area offers rustic camping overlooking the Lower Falls on the Huron River. Mouth of the Huron Drive through the pines to where the big Huron River meets Lake Superior. This remote area is noted for its broad sandy beach and park like setting. Point Abbaye Located on the tip of Huron Bay over looking Lake Superior with a great view of the Huron Islands and Huron Mountains. The shoreline is jagged rocks of many different formations and levels and is a great place to go and chase the waves. From L'Anse take Main Street to the Skanee Road then turn left onto Townline Road. At the 4 way stop go straight, take next dirt road on right which should be the Pt. Abbaye road. Follow the road to the point. Craig Lake State Park Craig Lake State Park is the most remote state park in the system. It spans more than 6,900 acres in Baraga County. Craig Lake is a wilderness area and access into the park is somewhat of an adventure. Vehicles with high ground clearance are recommended due to the rocky conditions of the road. The park contains six full lakes and numerous small ponds along with a variety of wildlife such as deer, black bear, beaver, loons and a portion of the Upper Peninsula moose herd. Craig Lake is 374 acres and features six islands and high granite bluffs along its northern shoreline. This remote local is noted for its broad sandy beach and park like setting. First Sand Beach Located near Pequaming, Michigan with excellent swimming. Second Sand Beach This nice sandy beach is located near Pequaming, Michigan and has excellent swimming. Head of Keweenaw Bay Located on US-41 between L'Anse and Baraga. Baraga County Historical Sites Hanka Homestead Go Back in time and view a 1920's Finnish Farm. The original Finnish structures were built before the turn of the century. The Historic Pelkie Grade School Sit at the desks the students used, ring the school bell, view antique maps and see the old horse drawn school bus. Shrine of the Snowshoe Priest Visit the 35 foot brass statue that is overlooking Keweenaw Bay. Bishop Frederic Baraga was a famous Catholic missionary. Skanee, Michigan Visit three historic sites in Skanee. The Skanee Town Hall, the Skanee School and the Zion Lutheran Church. L'Anse Township Hall View the pictorial display of our history within the historic L'Anse Township Hall. L'Anse Township Park & Campground Visit the site of Baraga County's first trading post and the original townsite of L'Anse. You'll also have a beautiful view of Keweenaw Bay. Indian Cemetery Walk through the pinewoods and view how the Chippewa Indians buried their relatives from 1840 to present. Baraga County Historical Museum Make sure to visit and view thousands of historical artifacts from Baraga County's past. Alberta Village Museum Enjoy a self-guided tour of the sawmill that Henry Ford built in 1935. The steam powered sawmill was a key part of Ford's vision to build a self-sufficient model community. Covington Township Historical Museum Historical museum preserving the history of Covington, Michigan. Cross County Skiing, Snowshoeing Pinery Lakes Cross Country Ski Trail For cross-country skiing enthusiasts, we offer the Pinery Lakes Cross County Ski Trail. Set in a thick forest of red pines, the trail features three marked trail loops which can be combined for a total of five miles of groomed trails.
